In 1833, brothers Charles and William Bent opened a trading post on the Arkansas River in southeast Colorado named Bent’s Fort. Located along a 775-mile trade route that had become known as the Santa Fe Trail, Bent’s Fort soon became a major trading center for the entire region, and during its sixteen-year history, tens of thousands of horses and mules were bought, sold, and traded.

The fort was destroyed in 1849, and just over a century later, after careful restoration according to the original detailed building plans, it became part of the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places as Bent’s Old Fort. In early June, 2016, I spent a weekend at the fort, attending the Santa Fe Trail Encampment, an annual celebration of the fort’s trading heyday. There I met and spent a day with John Carson, great-grandson of Kit Carson. We had spoken earlier by phone, and he was waiting for me when I arrived.
